Tenure track research position in Interdisciplinary Data Science with applications in Medicine / Life Science / Health Care Systems in combination with a group- start up grant of 1.6 Mio EUR.

Pre-selection round

The Medical University of Vienna (MUV) is looking for an excellent young researcher to establish and manage an independent research group in the field of Medical Data Science. MUV is one of the most important top-level medical and life-science research institutions in Europe. It works in close collaboration with Europe’s largest hospital, the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), which provides a unique research environment in terms of big medical data. The group will be integrated in the Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics, and Intelligent Systems which is linked to the Complexity Science Hub Vienna.


·      The successful candidate(s) will be supported by the MUV in the final selection round in a two-stage call, issued by the science-funding agency WWTF (https://www.wwtf.at/upload/VRG19_web_v2.pdf). The offered tenure track position depends on the successful funding by WWTF. The 5-year grant money is up to € 1.6 Mio, and shall be used by the successful candidate for establishing a new research group in medical data science.

·      MUV offers the opportunity to establish such an independent research group by offering a stimulating research environment, research facilities and support in recruiting staff.

Qualifications / Requirements:

·      PhD in one of the quantitative sciences (statistics, mathematics, computer science, or similar)

·      Excellent publication track record that demonstrates quantitative skills and familiarity with mathematical methodology in medical data science

·      Strong affinity for scientific problems related to the life sciences, medical research, or the health care system

·      Experience with big data analytics / complex data analysis

·      Two to eight years of post-doc experience in the field of data science

·      Currently (for the past 2 years) working outside of Austria

·      Project management skills

·      Women are especially encouraged to apply

It must include an extended CV, list of publications and software, up to 5 selected publications as pdf, a detailed research statement/plan (3 pages), and the contact details of three scientists who are willing to write a letter of recommendation. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Any application received by April 30, 2019 will be considered. The selected candidate(s) will be supported to submit proposals to WWTF according to the grant time lines. Start dates are flexible within the limits of the WWTF guidelines for the grant scheme.     That must have been incredibly difficult not being 100% healthy during your daughter’s first year of life. It sounds though, that the experience has driven you to make wise choices about how you take care of yourself through diet and exercise. And that’s a positive. Thanks for sharing your story Laurie.
