VDSG event

Joint Event: Semantic Web - VDSG: Data Science solutions using Semantics

Semantic Web and Data Science are complementary disciplines working on solving problems based on large amounts of data. While Semantic Web technologies are based on Symbolic AI, Data Science relies rather on statistics and applies statistical approaches to AI.

Both disciplines approach same challenges from different perspectives while related to extracting meaningful information from several sources and large amounts of data. How to put those approaches together in a way that decision-makers could use it?

In this Meetup we will present recent developments at the intersection of machine learning and semantic knowledge modelling. We will discuss practical use case scenarios to illustrate potential results that could be achieved through the collaboration between both fields.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

  • Andreas Blumauer: is CEO and co-founder of Semantic Web Company. He is also the ‘product architect’ of PoolParty Semantic Suite. He holds a degree in computer science and is a distinguished Semantic Web expert. Andreas has a senior advisory role in customer projects.

  • Xander Wilcke: PhD Candidate at VU Amsterdam on Machine Learning on Knowledge Graphs.

  • Dr. Peter Kraker is founder and chairman of Open Knowledge Maps. Peter is a leading expert on scholarly communication, open science and bibliometrics and has published more than 35 papers on these topics. For his work, Peter received several awards and fellowships, he is has a vast experience in research and has worked in a number of EU-funded projects. He is core team member of the Open Access Network Austria.

  • Rene Donner: With a background in electrical engineering René has worked for 8 years at the Medical University Vienna as a researcher in computer vision, focusing on anatomical structure localization and content based image retrieval. He is now CTO at contextflow, applying deep learning to large scale medical image data and developing smart tools to aid radiologists in their challenging tasks.

This is a joint Meetup of the Vienna Data Science Group, the Data Market Austria and the Vienna Semantic Web Meetup
