DS Salon Vol. 3: Social Media – Monitoring Their Impact on Civil Society

Maximilian Schubert of ISPA (Internet Service Providers Austria) provides a brief overview of the history and background of ISPA, and their activities in promoting greater safety on the net, before diving into the challenges faced by internet platforms as they navigate between the need for transparency, data privacy, freedom of speech, and government bureaucracies.

Via Skype from Rome, Martina Chichi describes Amnesty International Italy’s Barometer of Hate Project, which approaches online hate speech from a human rights perspective. Their goal is to pin down the main targets and triggers for online abuse in Italy, and determine the extent of politician accountability in the level of discourse.

Armin Rabitsch from wahlbeobachtung.org discusses the importance of social media in the election campaign process, the need to monitor the online public discourse of political candidates and the advertising budget flows as part of civil society’s efforts to uphold democratic institutions, and the obstacles that currently stand in the way.

data4good’s Rania Wazir presents the first results of the 3-week social media monitoring campaign, and relates the wide range of challenges that had to be faced: from the API access obstacle course to the devil in the GDPR details, and from project management woes to the sentiment analysis blues.
